Spokespersons for the recently created Alliance of Spanish Health and Biosciences Clusters (ACESABIO) told government representatives on Monday about the creation of the alliance and its vision to “turn the health sector into an economic engine”.
Meeting with the Government
On May 13 in Madrid, the 12 regional clusters that make up ACESABIO met with the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Universities, Juan Cruz Cigudosa; the Director General for Industrial Strategy and SMEs of the Ministry of Industry and Tourism; and the Secretary General for Digital Health, Alfredo Gonzalez. During the meeting, the alliance, which represents more than 1,050 entities in the healthcare sector in Spain, was presented.
Representation and Objectives
ACESABIO, which includes entities from 10 Spanish regions, seeks to be a valid representative of the entire health sector value chain, promoting public-private collaboration and fostering territorial cohesion. The alliance aims to transform the Spanish industrial sector to become leading, innovative and competitive on a global scale, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the Ministries of Industry, Health and Science, Innovation and Universities.

Impact and Scope
The alliance brings together 1,050 entities, with an outstanding entrepreneurial focus as 73% are SMEs, including 197 startups. With an aggregate turnover of more than 27,000 million euros and 378,000 direct jobs, ACESABIO reflects the entire value chain of the health and biosciences sector, from research and development to the marketing and distribution of products and services.
Balearic perspective
The recent formation of ACESABIO is a significant step forward for the biosanitary ecosystem of the Balearic Islands, with a special emphasis on BIOIB. This alliance facilitates the connection of the Balearic Islands with other communities and companies throughout Spain, promoting crucial synergies to reduce the investment gap in biomedical innovation in the region. Successful examples, such as the Mallorcan company Sanifit, demonstrate the potential of the Balearic Islands in the biotechnology field.
ACESABIO will not only strengthen competitiveness and innovation in the Balearic Islands, but will also help to consolidate the healthcare sector as an essential economic driver in Spain. The meeting with the three public administrations underlined ACESABIO’s crucial role in Spain’s industrial transformation, improving territorial cohesion and fostering excellence in healthcare and biosciences services.
