2026 Grants to encourage the incorporation of consolidated research talent – ATRAE Program

Description

📢 The State Research Agency announces the ATRAE 2026 grants, aimed at facilitating the stable incorporation of consolidated research talent of recognized international prestige to the Spanish Science, Technology and Innovation System.

🎯 The objective is to attract excellent research personnel who have recently developed a relevant part of their professional activity abroad, favoring the creation and consolidation of top-level research teams.

📌 Funded actions should include:

  • hiring of the principal investigator;
  • execution of an own R&D&I project led by that person;
  • Optionally, adaptation of spaces, laboratory renovation or improvement of facilities necessary for the line of research.

The grant can reach up to €1,000,000 per action, or up to €1,200,000 if the researcher comes from U.S. research organizations and meets the specific requirements of the call.

 

Beneficiaries

Spanish R&D&I entities may be beneficiaries, among them:

  • public research organizations;
  • public universities and their university institutes;
  • private universities with proven R&D&I capacity and activity;
  • public health entities and institutions linked to or contracted with the National Health System;
  • accredited health research institutes of a public nature;
  • other public R&D&I centers with their own legal personality and with R&D&I as their main activity.

❗ Associations, clusters or private non-profit entities that are not considered eligible beneficiary entities do not appear as direct applicants to the call.

Dates and deadlines

From April 23, 2026 to June 4, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.

📌 The application must be submitted by the beneficiary entity, not by the individual researcher, through the electronic means enabled by the State Research Agency.

Budget

Total credit of the call: 40,000,000 €.

📊 Maximum aid per performance:

  • up to €1,000,000;
  • up to €1,200,000 for profiles from U.S. research organizations that meet specific requirements.

The aid may finance contracting costs, execution of the R&D&I project, personnel, mobility, equipment, consumables, technical software, industrial property, contractual research, consulting, scientific dissemination and adaptation of facilities. Indirect costs are calculated as 25% of certain direct costs.
